World Class Leader Board
DOS - 1988
Description of World Class Leader Board
Although a fairly primitive golf simulation, World Class Leader Board is notable as the true precursor of Access Software breakthrough Links golf series. Among its long list of innovations, the game uses RealSound to play voice samples through the PC speaker, similar to Access' Mean Streets. Here is more detailed description from MobyGames:
"Access, creators of the long-running Links series of realistic golf games, made their first golf game on the Commodore 64 (later ported to the PC). The PC version revolutionized the use of the PC speaker to reproduce voice samples via their patented "RealSound" process. Quips like "No doubt about it, he's deep in the sandtrap", "Straight onto the fairway", and "Looks like he hit the tree, Jim." are used to provide running commentary on the gameplay. WCLB is a fairly simplistic simulation of golf, with wind, snap and power being your main [only] factors to contend with, but is still a good way to get started. A course editor is provided. The courses range from real, like St. Andrews, to fictional, like The Gauntlet (designed to push your skills to the maximum)."
Although the game doesn't stand up as well as Accolade's Jack Nicklaus series, it still provides a lot of challenging fun -- and real nostalgia for Links fans. Two thumbs up!

This ended up as being my favourite golf game on the C64. At the time, the graphics weren't bad at all and although I am not a fan of the sport, I did get engrossed with this. Interesting to read on here that World Class Leader Board was the game that spawned the excellent Links series.

I played this on C64. Later I had an A500 too, but I never played this game on it. This game can be useful to relaxing. It's easy to control. The situation is realistic, sometimes funny. It doesn't seem to me to be better on other machines. It was a bit slow, but I loved seeing it draw the course.

Great game! First played It on my Amstrad CPC464 shortly after Its release.
There's a bug which was never (as far as I know) sorted out. Here It Is :-
When you're on the putting green, If your shot leaves you exactly 2ft from the hole, no matter how careful you are - your shot will fail! The game won't let you sink the ball from 2ft!
Instead, hit the ball too short, or two far, and try again. As long as you shorten or lengthen the shot, you'll succeed! You'll lose a shot, but there's no alternative.
This bug was on both the Amstrad and Spectrum versions - I can't comment on other platforms.
I played this game many, many times In the late 80's-early 90's and learned how to overcome this annoying problem. Why It was never sorted out, I couldn't say. Nevertheless, It's a great game - Enjoy!

Was there ever a Windows 3.x port of this game? I seem to remember playing some golf game on Windows in the early 90s that was 98% the same as this; but I can't find any trace of such a Windows port.

One of the best golf game ever! Good to relax, and good to have a challenge.

Having trouble getting it to run: After downloading/unzipping WCLB, I drag and dropped the files into dosbox. Then I type c:\golf.exe and press enter. The cursor moves down one row and blinks and nothing happens. I can't type anything else in that window and have to close it and start over.

I have great memories of playing this game on an old 8088 in the mid 90s. More fun than a lot of newer golf games.
